Billie doesn’t rush.

You’ll often find her moving slowly through the seagrass beds of Cabbage Tree Bay, rising gently for air before drifting back down into the bay. There’s a calmness to the way she moves, steady, familiar, completely at ease in a place she knows well.

If you didn’t know her story, you’d think this was just another quiet moment in the ocean.

But there’s something different about seeing Billie.

There’s a history behind every movement. A reminder that not long ago, this same turtle was struggling to stay afloat, relying on people to step in and help. A few dedicated rescuers heeded the call.

Now, she's back where she belongs. A favourite for some. A spirit animal to at least one.

Encounters like this aren’t just about what you see; they’re about what’s been restored.

04
Release
Billie was released back into Cabbage Tree Bay in front of a large local crowd, a powerful moment that brought the community together.
He's not just a turtle. He's Manly's turtle.
A community gathered around one turtle. That's where conservation starts.
Billie's story travelled. It was shared on social media, picked up by local press, talked about at the water's edge by people who had never paid much attention to what lived beneath the surface.

One rescued turtle became a reason for an entire community to care about the bay it swims in.

That's not a small thing. Cabbage Tree Bay is a marine protected area — but protection only works when people understand what they're protecting. Billie made that personal.
